Relive the 2023 Runaround
The 46th annual Berkeley Lab Runaround launched on a sunny Friday morning with a “ready, set, go!” command from Lab Director Mike Witherell. On Oct. 13, approximately 600 employees biked, ran, or walked across the starting line at Building 50 and covered a route that wound through the Lab’s hill site before ending at Building 90.
Fastest runners
The first runner, Ryan Smith, crossed the finish line with an 8 minute time. Ryan was also the fastest among male-identified runners. Jennifer Doyle and Morgan Wall tied with the fastest time for female-identified runners, 11:03. Emma Rice was the fastest nonbinary runner, recording a 12:12 time.
Congratulations to all four runners, and to all the runners, walkers, and 20+ bicyclists who moved through the route! The list of all submitted times can be found on the Results page on the Runaround website. Not all cards were legible, so if you have any changes, please complete this change request form.
Running was not the only Runaround activity this year. Roughly 30 employees took advantage of a yoga class at the Potter Street atrium or the Pilates class held at Building 90.
The Runaround was capped with a Finish Line Festival that included great music from the Lab’s own Miles Green, and booths hosted by several employee resource groups, Lab divisions, and vendors. And bringing this entire event to life were more than 50 employee volunteers from across the Lab.

2023 Runaround T-shirt Design Revealed
Sixteen amazing designs were submitted for the 2023 Runaround t-shirt contest. Ziad Bousaleh of the Environment, Health & Safety Division, created this year’s winning design. Ziad wanted to incorporate elements of running and exercising along with scientific aspects reflecting the Lab’s research environment in his design. He credits his wife with inspiring the final version.
All registered participants will receive a 2023 t-shirt. Participants who did not register in advance will have the option of adding their name to a list for a t-shirt at a future date.
The 2023 Lab Runaround will take place between 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Friday, October 13. For a course map, visit https://runaround.lbl.gov/2023-runaround-route-map/.
